Hey Ryan

Welcome to the blog. It looks like you have been on here for a few weeks, I just haven't noticed you until I had sometime this evening. Once again those were some great times at the Summer Games. I tried hard, but I couldn't hold you off there at the end. Are you doing the Bryce Canyon Half? Most of us here in St. George are planning on it. My training has kind of been up and down lately. The last few days I've been struggling with a cough, but hopefully things will clear up soon. Good luck the next few weeks with your training.

splits:

1. 5:58

2. 5:57

last .11 was 29 seconds.

theres not much competition at this small town race. i took the lead early and by about half way i couldn't even see anyone behind me. i was basically racing myself. i ran about 30 seconds faster than last year when i won it.

they have a nice parade. food festival. and fireworks.

ran 6 more miles in the afternoon. ran the first 3 at about 7:30 pace then pushed the next three miles a little (6:24,6:29,5:53)

felt really good considering the race earlier and the heat of the afternoon.

left my family at home and drove to enterprise last night and slept on my gradnparents porch. It rained all night and i was thinking maybe i should have stayed home. it was still raining a little as i got on the bus but at the start it was not raining but roads were a little wet.

i felt good before the race and had no soreness.

Mike schramm went out fast. i was already running about a 5:10 pace and let him go. in hind sight i probably should have went with him because after a few minutes he settled into about the same pace as i was and our gap stayed the same most of the race(20-30 sec). after the first half mile i dropped everyone behind me and ran the rest of the race with mike in my sights. i closed the gap during the last mile and mike's time was 33:33. I think i could have got him with a little more road in from of me.

we compared our splits and it was pretty even except for the last. i gained about 25 seconds on hime that last 1.1. i thought i would be suffering more the last few miles because of saturdays half but i felt strong. my garman had the distance at 6.08 others had it at about 6.1 so it was just a little short of 10k but it was the same course as other years.

got dressed to run last night at about 9:30 and my wife said "your going running in the rain"? i had no idea it was raining but it was coming down pretty good so i didn't go. crawled out of bed at 8:00 this morning and did 8 miles at 7:45 pace. felt a little tired but haven't been sore from the race.

drove to vegas for a few baby blessings.  we arrived at 2:30 . i decided to go for another run.  it was hot but i figured i could cool off in the back yard pool afterword. ended up doing 5 miles at 7:47 ave pace.  the pool felt good and made the run worthwhile.

got home from work and felt like another run so off i went. it was warm(5:00 pm) but breezy. did my 8 mile loop, first 2 miles in 13:15 , next 2.25 miles at tempo-13:20. total time for the run was 54:00 minutes. took a cold bath after the run. cold baths feel better after a long run than they did in russia in the middle of winter.

my wifes water broke this morning. i went out for an easy 5.5 then took wife to the hospital. we had our baby girl at 3:30 pm. things went well and mom and baby are doing fine. thought about trying to fit more miles in at night in the dark but slept instead. good thing i had a couple of good mileage days early in the week or this week would have been pretty bad. i might try to get out sunday night late for a run. with the baby, work, etc.....things should be interesting.

i think i'm in better shape than last year but not in necessarily better marathon shape. hope to get one or two 18+ milers in before the sgm. does anyone think it is too late for this?

Ty is my age. I went to middle and high school with him at Pine View. We actually went to our junior prom together. I know he ran a marathon or two when he was younger, does he still run anymore? I guess this explains why I have seen your parents at some races (I am Clyde's wife). My maiden name is Hacker, you might know my sister Kasi (her maiden name is Provstgaard). She graduated in '94.

I hope to see you on Saturday. I think this is going to be your year to hit that Boston Qualifier in fact I know you can do it. You've got the speed, just run by feel that first half then bring it home the second half.

From Dustin on Wed, Oct 03, 2007 at 23:14:19

I believe they are going to have the clif pacers here this year and I ran with the 3:10 group in 2004, it was lots of fun and I got my Boston qualifier in 3:07 and felt pretty good the whole way, I would recommend running with them if your looking for that pace. If you want to run a little faster Steve Hooper and I are planning on going out around 1:20 to 1:21 range for the half. Last year I hit 1:23, so other guys that are staying with me Friday night are looking to hit 1:16-1:18 for the first half, but I don't think I'm going to go out that fast. I know Bill Campbell is hoping to run around 2:55 range. His PR is 3:00, so I know he'll be looking for some company as well.

I guess you could say this was a breakthrough race for me. before the race i decided to go out at about a 7:00 pace and see what would happen. i was probably at a 6:50 ave pace until veyo hill where i backed off, just wanting to get to the half in decent time. hit the half in 1:33:45 so i guess i ran the second half in 1:30:20. overall i felt really good.

i will have to analyze my training and try to figure out what the difference was this year

it was a PR, ran a 3:17 when i was 18.

i know difference wasn't long runs.

key differences: more mileage

a few twice a day runs

GU energy gel(never used anything before)

tempo runs

more racing than ever before(5k,10k,halfs)

didn't have much soreness on sunday morning. i told my wife that when i got out of bed i didn't feel any worse than i do every day(i usually don't feel good when i get up, feels like i got ran over in my sleep every night)

i find it interesting that i can still have such a good workout but yet my mileage is so low and has been for well over 2 months. i feel like i am finding out that i can run low mileage for at least 2 to 3 months and still maintain a high fitness level. fitness for a marathon?(no) but half marathons or less i feel like my fitness is still at a pretty high level. my goal is to make each run count and not worry about mileage right now. after all my next marathon isn't until next fall.

A talented runner can run a semi-decent half off really goofy training. However, in the marathon, this really starts to bite. People that would otherwise not have a shot at touching you beat you by half an hour or more. The reason we think 2:30 is good, and 2:20 is really really good is that most people do not train properly for a marathon for long enough. Otherwise, there would be as many people running 2:15-2:17 as there are 15:00 5 K runners, and 2:30 would be regarded at the level of current 2:45.

point taken. i run one marathon a year. yes i would like to run faster marathons and i know that more mileage is one of the ingrediants. i'm just not willing to pay the price yet.

went to las vegas this morning. not for the bowl game. we had a family Christmas party. the weather was very nice and went down prepared for a run. after a three hour drive i didn't really feel like a run but i knew i would regret it if i didn't. my garmin batteries died at 9 miles into the run so i don't know exactly how far i went but it was at least 12. first 8 were a little slower than 7:00 pace then at 8 i picked it up to around 6:15-6:30 pace and finished the run this way. felt quite energetic on the run and had plenty of energy. overall the body feels great.

8 mile loop in the morning. temps in the mid to hi 30's and i was hot the whole time. first mile was 7:34, next 3 were sub 6:50, next three ave about 7:15 just running a comfortable pace. on the last mile i decided to try to catch the 7:00 guy. first 3rd of the last mile is uphill then levels before a slight downhill to my house. last mile was 6:12. happy with the run. happy that i got a good start for the week. i will probably beable to get a few extra miles in over the next two weeks. i won't be at work as much and there will be a lot of junk food around. quite often i will decide to go for a run rather than eat the junk.

went for a run down in st george in the afternoon. it snowed in cedar last night 3-4 inches so i wanted to take advantage of another chance to run in the south country. you st. george people suffer through the hot summers but winter is nice. my summers in cedar are great for running. merry christmas.
